about

I don't know if it's just because I don't have to listen to my own voice but this might be the song I've listened to most out of all the ones I've ever recorded. Mama Lips and I collaborated on the record this track is from and their approach to songwriting and general presence in my home studio while we recorded really shaped how the songs came out. You can get the whole album for free here:

I've been playing the banjo for a while but never felt confident enough in my abilities to record anything and have still to this day only played it live two or three times. So to have a banjo instrumental right in the middle of an album really speaks to Mama's soothing presence, as well as their celebration of the blemishes. Like Jason Molina or Geneviève Castrée, or most of my favourite artists in any medium really, they know how to leave evidence of the human hand behind in their work in order to speak to you more directly. So even though I'm not (speaking), this still feels weirdly naked and honest to me.

It had no name until the last day of recording. After Mama had gone home, I lay out on the fire escape, smoked and listened back to the demos in my headphones. As this song came on, a cloud passed overhead that looked just like my grandmother.
