about

Me and some friends used to run a DIY venue called Nerd Hutch out of the basement of a comic shop. Because many of the collective were huge fans of the film Napoleon Dynamite, we decided to host an event called "Napoleon Dynamite's Dynamite Dyna-night". An insane amount of work went into this event. I cooked 200 tater tots to give away on the night. Our friend, a professional photographer, cosplayed as Deb all night to take people's photos and managed to source the same kind of pink satin sheet the character uses as her backdrop in the film. And we formed a band called The Ligers, writing a whole set of original music inspired by the movie and switching instruments between us as we went.

Only two people showed up. The tater tots started sweating in the tupperware and went soggy. It turned out another bespoke film screening with live entertainment was happening at an old school building around the corner - The Breakfast Club. Newcastle's a small town anyway but the Venn diagram of movie-goer who enjoys each of these movies has gotta be pretty close to a perfect circle, right? The good news is, we did make recordings of some other tracks too. Most of these were written and performed by Napoleon mega fan and most-industrious-artist-I-know Mama Lips:

As for my contribution, Uncle Rico is a character close to my heart. A hopeless romantic and a clueless goofball forever caught in a nostalgia web of his own making. I had to write my song about him, so here it is. And devout fans of the film may notice a lot of (verbatim) quotes used in the lyrics here. Good skills.

lyrics

It might be a free country
But let's face it, I can't do whatever I want
I wanna go back in time
Play that fourth quarter
I wanna take state
I wanna soak it up in a hot tub with my soulmate

But my van can take me anywhere
Like my dreams can take me anywhere
Do you see those mountains over there?
How much you wanna bet I could throw a football over them?

When I wanna stop the motion
I just imagine that I'm weightless
In the middle of the ocean
Surrounded by tiny little seahorses
But back in '82, oh man the things that I could do
I could throw a pig skin a quarter mile
Disarm the ladies with a smile

Now I'm making 120 bucks a day
But I can't help thinking it would have been different
If coach had let me play
And my momma took a spill on a sand dune ride today
Her coccyx broke just like my heart
When the coach told me I couldn't play

1, 2, 3, 4, I knock on her door
5, 6, 7, 8, "would you like to buy some plates of nylon polymer?"
I drop the box in front of her, 'cause
9, 10, 11, 12, I'm living out my life in hell.
