about

When we'd play this live with Skull Puppies I'd always have two ways of introducing it depending on the crowd and how I was feeling. Which was the same for most of our tracks really - they pretty much all have a surface meaning and an implied one. So this was either a song about the Legend of Zelda or complex post-traumatic stress disorder.

"Anna" is a name I've used in tons of my projects from music, comics, and zines through to the main character of my ongoing puzzle series. Besides being satisfyingly palindromic and attractive to write and speak, there is a bigger reason I'm obsessed with the name; in the 1973 non-fiction book 'Wisconsin Death Trip' and the short 1999 documentary of the same name, a newspaper report from Jasckon County in the 1890's details the actions of a teenage arsonist called Anna Majonek.

The information, and lack thereof, about her in these two sources sparked a blaze of imagination in me (so to speak). As well as having a starring role in a two-page comic, being a placeholder name in a 48-page perzine, the protagonist of a 20+ issue puzzle series, and being mentioned in multiple songs I've written (including one about Majonek herself), I now also have the initials "A.M." and a burning cabin tattooed on my arm.

In this song, I'm appealing to the Anna who hadn't taken shape yet - the one from my puzzle series. The hero and survivor, who I could take strength from when the world around me just served as a constant reminder of pain and fear. It's a song letting you know that escapism is one of human-kind's most valuable evolutionary tricks following a traumatic episode. Having the ability to dissociate can be the crucial difference between making it or not, and is an essential part of a wider and ongoing recovery process for a lot of folks. And if chinning Ganon and restoring peace to Hyrule helps you get there, all the better.

lyrics

Oh Anna you're the heart in the grass
You are the fairy in the glass bottle
Got a collection of the keys to my chest
And I'm losing this boss battle
I'm going back to where I saved it last
I've gotta kill this fucking link to the past

It gets lonely riding this pony
Over Hyrule field by moonlight
I keep hearing that enemy music
But there's nothing real to fight
I'll just go back to where I saved it last
You know that change was never coming fast

On the long walk home last week
I saw flowers by the roadside
A spirit told me you had died
Oh who would even let me know
If you decided again that it was time to go?

I'm dead dreaming, the static on screen
It was blinking with flashes of blue
And that voice in my head when I'm prostrate in bed
Kept on asking "do you wish to continue"?
I'll just go back to where I saved it last

Oh Anna there's a fire in my belly
When I breathe out you are near me
Oh Anna I was slicing through the jelly
Now the bad guys know to fear me
Oh Anna every time I start a quest
I feel my life reduced to zero
Oh Anna come and save me from myself
You know this kingdom needs a hero
